Letter from the editor – 39.23.1a

To the amazing ML/LD community.

This edition starts with a news article linking one of Apples legendary designers now looking to team up with Open Ai to build a device that perfectly complements AI. Previously he has expressed concerns with the addictiveness of smartphones and it seems he is aware of the unintended consequences of such products.

Another article dives into the concept called “phubbing” again as well as another article that highlights some of the pros of social media (for example connecting people). It’s important for me to not be too alarmist so I’m always on the lookout for articles which highlight the other side of the coin to give a balanced approach, even though I’m firmly on the side of the negative!

And as I scrolled through Instagram one evening (yes I do sometimes aimlessly scroll, as mentioned this is not a prohibition mission, rather one of restoring the balance) the all powerful alogorithms must be picking up on my subject a choice as it fed me a video which quoted:

“Give them social media when you want their childhood to end”

Too harsh?

Our goal is to minimise the adverse effects of device overuse while celebrating technology’s immense potential.
