Letter from the editor – 44.23

To the amazing ML/LD community,

This weeks edition starts off with a blog article about the under construction AI pin – essentially a device that interacts with the world around you to reduce your device usage.

This is a really interesting discussion about potentially using tech to “detech” our lives and add a layer of automation that we need. The big question is though if this layer is added will it actually reduce our device usage or add a level of complexity that will require more time on devices.

We had initially thought that devices would free us from the drudgery of manual processing and give us more time back in our lives for friends and family. Instead it seems to have added more digital hooks to our daily activities. I am in favour of anything that could potentially reduce our device usage, but the cynic in me wonders that as this project is backed by the AI pioneers, perhaps this project is designed to simply replace the smartphone as a device, and get us hooked on their operating system instead.

And we fully get the irony that you are reading this on a device, We stand firmly as advocates of technology, believing that it can enrich our lives when approached with balance and intention. Our goal is to minimise the adverse effects of device overuse while celebrating technology’s immense potential.
